A quick tale 138

To my niece, 3 hours old

When you are old enough to read this, I hope you will not be embarrassed of me. But chances are, you will roll your eyes and mutter what a sentimental old fool I am. Just like how I would have reacted. And if you're anything like your aunt, you too will have a short fuse and a broad forehead. The second of which you will come to dislike. Immensely. But whatever your attempts at hiding it, don't ever try a fringe. It will not work. You will be annoyed at the way it falls over your eyes and before long, you will have pinned it back. And that, my dear, will only draw attention to what you seek to cover.

There's so much we need to discuss. But by the time we meet you will already be a toddler and your mother will be full of stories. I will hear about your first words and about the time when you climbed up the stairs all on your own! I will have missed most of your antics. Something I can never reconcile to. And in ten days' time it will fall upon me to call out your name. I will ask them to hold the phone close to your tender ears and I'll whisper it long distance.

Ok, it's quite a stupid thing to say really, but this is one of the best I've read here Ammani. Not because this is a tale as much as a note to someone special. Just like I want all my writing to be.

Seriously great stuff this.

Learnt about the Gruffalo story today after I got curious about your quote on top. Feels like one could have a child just for the reason one could get to read such stories! Really loved what I read. Silly old fox doesnt he know there is no such thing as Gruffalo! I know foxes, gruffaloes and even mice that resemble the story and have a big reason to copy the quote to my family email!

Nice Ammani. :-) Just spoke to the grand dad, who is having super-fun. He said "I am very very excited." And we both calculated the time of birth according to EDT.:-)

Just the other day my 6 yr old nephew called long distance to say "xyzAthai i liked your saree which you wore for abc's engagament. It was sooo blue".

It's another thing that it was not an engagement but a valaikappu and he could not get that right ;-)

They do grow so fast...

Congratulations on becoming an Athai. Now that I have internet as of last night, I am looking forward to some pleasurable hours of reading on your blog again. Thanks so much for the lift (please thank your husband SO MUCH for driving me to HH station) and for the biscuits. And lots of hugs to your lovely son who was most cuddly.

Have you seriously considered a career in writing? Or at least free-lancing? If not, please, please do.

I am sure when your neice reads this she will smile from ear to ear, like I am doing now.

This is really beautiful.

Please save this post from the ravages of technology... Not every child is born with a post dedicated to them... I am sure she will love it. May she grow up to be wonderful like someone I know... minus the short-fuse! ;-)
